Puberty 2 - Mitski

Image
What do you get when you mix The Pixies, Weezer and St Vincent? Mitski’s Puberty 2 of course. In a fit of art pop and Noise Pop, Mitski has released one of the finest Indie albums of recent years. The album is the 26 year old American’s 4 th  and while her previous efforts like 2014’s  Bury Me At Makeout Creek  might have been a anxious sounding slow-burner of an album, it’s sequel manages to give Mitski something she’s never had before, her own sound.  Easy comparisons to contemporary artists could be Angel Olsen or St Vincent with whom she shares gender as well as adventurousness and artistic sensibilities.   The album cover of Mitski's fourth studio album. The first half of the record is easily the best record half I’ve heard all year with the potential exception of A Tribe Called Quest’s recent record. The album starts with the infectious Happy and the run of tracks from then until I Bet On Losing Dogs is incredible. However the...

NME top tracks of 2014. Why?

Image
Well NME has posted it's top 50 tracks of this year. Naturally it failed to match my personal opinion. Perhaps the worst part about the list is that they've revealed it over a month before the end of the year. December could have some of the greatest music ever, as far as we know, but alas as William Shakespeare said "December aint no part of a year". NME's top 10 was 1. Seasons (Waiting For You) - Future Islands 2. Can't Do Without You - Caribou 3. Touch The Leather - Fat White Family 4. Red Eyes -  The War on Drugs 5. Blockbuster Night Part 1 - Run The Jewels 6. Eez-Eh - Kasabian 7. Digital Witness -  St Vincent 8. Zombie - Jamie T 9. Little Monster - Royal Blood 10. Chambers Of Reflection - Mac DeMarco Basically you can separate these songs into a few sections 1. NME's personal addictions (Fat White Family, Kasabian, Jamie T) 2. NME wanting to be Hip (Caribou, Run The Jewels) 3. Popular indie choices (Mac DeMarco, Royal Blood, St...

The Holy Trinity of Modern Feminity in Rock

Image
Rock and Roll has constanly been plagued by machonigy and idiocrasy (Sometimes the same thing). It isn't unusual inside Rock to have Males who flaunt their (In my view) (non-existent) sexuality. The genre is a male dominated field, although many of rock's greatest songs are inspired by women. The male genre however, has had frequent notable talented females who have outshone their male counterparts. However during a lot of the past they have been forced to depend on male colleagues, such as Debby Harry's dependance on the band (Blondie), Stevie Nick's dependance on Lindsay Buckingham and Fleetwood Mac, even Patti Smith the godmother of punk had a dependance on male songwriters. Blondie; One of many female fronted 70s bands. However this trend has been bucked recently, while rock's status as "Alive" may be dubious in the modern climate, many female's independently strive to keep it alive, and this post will be about three of those females who ra...

Top 25 songs of 2014 so far!

Image
I'd argue that 2014 has been a worse year for rock music than 2013 was. There have been fewer stand out bands, fewer amazing debut singles and less amazing albums. However don't allow my pessimistic thoughts make you think that modern rock is still not in fine form. There have been plenty of amazing songs released this year and in no particular order here are my top 25 songs released in 2014 (Not exclusively rock but probably) Rango - Catfish & The Bottlemen  Genre: Indie Rock Next Time - Curtis Harding Genre: Soul, Funk, Rock I Almost Fell - Axxa/Abraxas  Genre: 60s-style Psychedelic Rock Lazaretto - Jack White Genre: Blues Rock/Rock My Silver Lining - First Aid Kit Genre: Folk Pop  Adult Diversion - Alvvays  Genre: Folk Pop  Heavenly Creatures - Wolf Alice Genre: Alternative Rock Love Is To Die - Warpaint  Genre: Psychedelic Rock Sun Structures - Temples  Genre: Psychedelic Rock ...
