We Got It From Here… Thank You 4 Your Service

Image
From 1990 to 1993 A Tribe Called Quest was the greatest active Hip Hop group, and perhaps the greatest artist of the time. They innovated the genre with People’s Instinctive Travels and pushed the genre further than ever before with Midnight Marauders , and then they released two okay albums and called it a day in 1998. We Got It From Here… Thank You 4 Your Service is a worthy sequel to Midnight Marauder. It’s fresh, innovative, and funky and despite the album being made by 40 year olds it sounds incredible contemporary. The album artwork of their sixth studio album.  The obvious comment all reviews must say about the album though is about Phife Dawg who died earlier this year. Every review then comments on how he is the domineering voice of the album, but to me this album is the perfect collaboration and no one member shines brightest. As well as their first album in 18 years it’s also likely to be their last, and in a way that’s a good thing, because th...

18 Legendary Things Leon Russell Did

Image
Leonard Cohen, Bap Kennedy, Bob Cranshaw, Kay Starr, Jean-Jacques Perrey, Biser Kirov, Victor Bailey, Eddie Harsch and now Leon Russell. Those are notable musicians who have died this November so far. That’s quite a few, and I would love to write a piece on each of them following each of their sad passings. But if I did, this blog would just become a musician’s obituary page.  However Leon Russell is different.  I mean… who else could pull of this look? Leon Russell is possibly the most notable sideman of rock history. He played with The Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, George Harrison, and many more, including artists outside of Rock, like Frank Sinatra, Doris Day, BB King and many others. Rather than doing a standard obituary piece on one of the greatest pianists in rock history, I decided that perhaps a better thing to do would be to simply make a list of accomplishments.  18 things Leon Russell can present to the after...

Artists of 2015 #2 - Tobias Jesso Jr

Image
I was on the internet the other day, as you all are right now, I was reading about, getting my information and such. I stumbled across a piece on Tobias Jesso Jr. In it the author compared him to Elton John, John Lennon and… Tom Odell. Its not a hidden fact that I hate Tom Odell. So I was very offended that people could look at Tobias and say you're like that piano pop kid. Tobias is on a different wavelength and he is a talented musician. The artist however who he is most similar to is Harry Nilsson, the famous rock balladeer. While Tobias may not have the voice to match Nilsson's he does have the same song-writing spirit. Nowhere is this more prevalent than on Tobias' song Hollywood. Love songs are perhaps the most common sort of song, it is the reason many people play the guitar. So writing an amazing love song is increasingly difficult, but Tobias. Tobias has it. Album Goon out March 17th

Or maybe you're going to have a child yourself, congratulations if that is the case. So what songs will be on this list? Mainly Rock Songs, and some songs you may not believe are about children, they are in fact. 1. Pearl Jam - Daughter A song about a young girl with learning disabilities, this song attempts to highlight her everyday struggles.  2.
